The borage plant (Borago officinalis), also known as starflower or bee bread, is a well-known culinary herb with blue flowers, originating from the countries around the Mediterranean Sea and spread throughout Europe and North America over the centuries.
Rich in GLA
Borage oil is the richest natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that is hardly found in food. The body can, in principle, produce GLA itself from (cis) linoleic acid. However, in situations where there is an increased need, it can be useful to supplement the diet with a GLA supplement. Factors that can play a role include excessive consumption of trans fats, saturated fats, sugar, alcohol, and carbohydrates.
