The product 5-HTP 100 mg contains a uniquely highly concentrated Griffonia simplicifolia extract with no less than 30% of the active substance 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). The Griffonia shrub is a plant species common in Central and West Africa. The seeds of this crop are rich in 5-HTP. This essential amino acid easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted in the brain into the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is the precursor of the hormone melatonin.
5-HTP is an already converted form of tryptophan. The problem with tryptophan, however, is that there is a continuous struggle with other amino acids for absorption in the brain (Fernstrom, 2013). Tryptophan must therefore compete with amino acids such as leucine, valine, tyrosine and isoleucine. In practice, this means that tryptophan can only be converted into serotonin for an average of 1/5 (Fernstrom, 2013).
