This imbalance can have health consequences. Modern diets contain more than enough fat, but not the essential fats that are important for the body. Therefore, it's important to achieve a balanced ratio of the right fatty acids. This can be achieved, to a certain extent, by making dietary adjustments.
There are two types of essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6. These are important for maintaining good health. Omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found in plant products and has limited conversion to EPA and DHA. EPA is only found in oily fish, and DHA is found in both oily fish and algae.
Omega-6 fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Both are plant-based. Modern diets contain too much linoleic acid (6% instead of the recommended 1%). This leads to increased conversion to arachidonic acid (AA), which can cause health problems. The fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid can restore the balance in the omega-6 fatty acid ratio.
Gamma-linolenic acid is a relatively rare fatty acid that occurs naturally in the seeds of evening primrose, borage, and blackcurrant. It is also found in small amounts in sunflower and sesame oil, among other things. The body can also produce it from linoleic acid. Substances that aid in this conversion are vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and magnesium. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that is converted in the body into prostaglandins 1 and 3 with the help of vitamins B3, B6, and C. Some people cannot sufficiently convert linoleic acid into GLA and therefore rely on one of the two main sources of GLA: evening primrose oil and borage oil. Borage oil contains a very high GLA content compared to evening primrose oil.
