These resins protect the tree buds from external infections until they are ready to sprout.
Bees chew small amounts of resin from the buds of, for example, birch and poplar trees. Resin from conifers, juniper, and spruce has also been found in propolis.
As a result, the composition of propolis constantly changes, and resistance is unlikely to develop quickly.
Bees process the resin by adding enzymes and fermenting it from their saliva into propolis, transporting it in their pollen baskets on their hind legs to the beehive.
The sticky substance is then removed by other bees. They then mix the propolis with pollen and beeswax.
