Kelp is a natural source of iodine because the seaweed has adapted to an environment where iodine is abundant in the ocean. Seaweeds, including kelp, have the unique ability to absorb iodine from seawater and concentrate it in their tissues. This process is called "bioaccumulation."
The presence of iodine in seawater is the result of several factors, including volcanic activity and rainwater that dissolves minerals from the soil and carries them into the ocean. As a result, iodine is a natural trace element in seawater, albeit in small quantities.
